The iconic painting 'Mares and Foals in a River Landscape' painted by George Stubbs now adorns our new table mats. The painting is a favorite here at Get the Gallop and part of a series of paintings by George Stubbs made between 1760 and 1769 of mares and foals. Most of the motifs are portraits of successful racing horses and broodmares, often owned by the client. It is said that Stubbs studied and drew from real horses, then arranged the individual subjects for the perfect composition. Stubbs is said to have started from the animals and the composition on a blank background, and that the landscape environment was only added afterwards, probably entirely from the artist's imagination.
Our coasters are reversible with motifs on both sides, George Stubbs painting 'Mares and Foals in a River Landscape' framed in different colors on one side, and our galloping horse, drawn by Peder Fredricson, on the other side. The mats are FSC-certified and handmade in Sweden.
